Description

This follow-on course to data structures (e.g., EN.605.202) provides a survey of computer algorithms, examines fundamental techniques in algorithm design and analysis, and develops problem-solving skills required in all programs of study involving computer science. Topics include advanced data structures (red-black and 2-3-4 trees, union-find), recursion and mathematical induction, algorithm analysis and computational complexity (recurrence relations, big-O notation, NP-completeness), sorting and searching, design paradigms (divide and conquer, greedy heuristic, dynamic programming, amortized analysis), and graph algorithms (depth-first and breadth-first search, connectivity, minimum spanning trees, network flow). Advanced topics are selected from among the following: randomized algorithms, information retrieval, string and pattern matching, and computational geometry. Prerequisite(s): EN.605.202 Data Structures or equivalent. EN.605.203 Discrete Mathematics or equivalent is recommended. Course Note(s): The required foundation courses may be taken in any order but must be taken before other courses in the degree. Students can only earn credit for one of EN.605.620, EN.605.621, EN.685.621 or EN.705.621

There are often many ways to solve a computational problem. Can we formalize that some problems are harder than others? Are some problems inherently difficult? How would you determine a “good” solution? Throughout this semester,
you’ll explore topics such as:

Along the way, you’ll build a broad understanding of the process of algorithm analysis - a useful skill when working with cross-disciplinary technical teams.

Algorithms are unambiguous abstract, programming language independent, specifications for performing calculation, data processing, automated reasoning, and other tasks.   They are at the core of most technologies used in modern computation systems.  All software-based systems implement algorithms of some sort.  The total system performance of these systems relies just as much on choosing efficient algorithms as the hardware, especially as problem data set sizes increases.  Studying algorithms helps to develop widely applicable analytical skills not just to solve individual problems but to develop efficent “recipes” for getting answers to many problems that extends beyond software systems and are relevant to all sciences and fields of human endeavor.

Students often find this course very demanding, regardless of the instructor. The course is NOT SELF-PACED (i.e., there are scheduled due dates for assignments and discussions).  It is very important that you set aside time each week to work on your course to keep up. It can be extremely difficult to catch up once you fall behind. Successful students with a very strong background in discrete mathematics may expect to spend an average of 15 hours/week on the readings, homework and discussion boards.  The design/programming/analysis projects take additional time. The Maryland Higher Education Council (MHEC) recommends 10 hours of homework per week in 3-credit graduate courses.

Course Structure

The course materials are divided into modules which can be accessed by clicking Modules on the course menu. A module will have several pages including the overview, content, readings, discussions, and assignments. You are encouraged to preview all pages of the module before starting. All modules run for a period of seven (7) days. You should regularly check the Grades and Announcements for assignment due dates.

There are weekly reading assignments with biweekly homework assignments.  The biweekly homework assignments consist of a combination of both individual and collaborative problems.  Additionally there are four design/programming/analysis assignments.  The design/programming/analysis assignments are an individual effort.

A major focus of this class is developing your research and analysis skills.  Weekly module and group discussions are a critical element of this learning process, and student participation and interaction is important.   Students are expected to actively engage in all weekly module discussions and collaborative homework assignment discussions. Discussion groups span four module weeks, with the exception of groups in the first few module weerks. There are fixed deadlines on the week, e.g., initial discussion posts due by Thursday 11:59pm, replies to other students in your group by Sat 11:59pm.

Each week you must start a thread in the open discussion forum associated with the current module. This first post must be done by Day 3 of the week where the module is presented. Your fellow group members need to reply in your thread within two days of the initial posting (i.e., by Day 5), and you will reply to theirs. You will be graded on your initial post and the replies to your group members for your on-line contributions. There is a degree of subjectivity, but I am looking for the relevance of your observations/comments to the topic in hand and the extent to which you have researched your responses.

Homework assignments will include one or more collaborative problems. Each group (which is the same as your discussion groups) will work together to solve the collaborative problems. Collaboration may take place within a Canvas discussion forum created by the group. External collaborative discussions (e.g., email, telephone, Zoom, IRC, Teams) are permitted.  At the end of each homework assignment, you will submit a performance assessment of how your group members contributed to the collaborative problems assigned. These evaluations are due when the homework is due. Failure to submit timely evaluations will also negatively impact your participation score.

To develop a broad understanding of the issues associated with designing and analyzing the expected performance of computer algorithms, and to develop greater competence and confidence in applying formal mathematical methods when determining the best approach to solving a computational problem.

Understanding how to categorize the difficulty of computational problems and their solutions (i.e., this course) will provide you with a foundation to handle a broad spectrum of cross disciplinary problems.  Some modules, such as those pertaining to NP-Complete problems and their approximations, touch upon deep mathematical concepts. These topics can be intimidating to approach, but diligence will be rewarded with insights into fascinating areas of analysis.  By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

This is perhaps the most well known introductory textbook to algorithms. It is a language-independent presentation of the core ideas behind algorithms and algorithm complexity with an equal focus between theory and analysis.   The language independence allows concentration on the theoretical concepts without requiring knowledge of a specific programming language.  It also an excellent reference once you complete the course, since each chapter is relatively self-contained and presents an algorithm or a design technique that can be quickly implemented using any imperative programming language.

Grading Policy

Grades should be interpreted according to these general rubrics:

Late assignments will be penalized 10 points per day late.

If you’re at risk of receiving a C or lower in the class, at the midpoint of the semester you’ll receive notice from the university or myself.

Academic Policies

Deadlines for Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Courses

Students may add a course up to one week after the start of the term for that particular course. Students may drop courses according to the drop deadlines outlined in the EP academic calendar (https://ep.jhu.edu/student-services/academic-calendar/). Between the 6th week of the class and prior to the final withdrawal deadline, a student may withdraw from a course with a W on their academic record. A record of the course will remain on the academic record with a W appearing in the grade column to indicate that the student registered and withdrew from the course.

Course Auditing
