This course focuses on the application of systems engineering principles to the test and evaluation of system elements and, ultimately, of the total system. Test requirements, selection of critical test parameters, analysis of test results, and determination of remedial action in the event of discrepancies are all systems engineering functions. Topics include validation and verification, similarities and differences in the nature of hardware and software testing, test tools and test procedures, testing during hardware-software integration, quality assurance test, environmental test, and operational test and evaluation. Student problems include scenario case studies using examples developed in the several previous courses.
This is a course in Systems Engineering viewed from a “test and evaluation” perspective.
“You” are the system engineer who will repeatedly be asked “Is the system ready?” Course will look at using T&E to supplement the systems development process to achieve greater overall product quality.
Develop an understanding and acceptance of test and evaluation as a critical aspect of the continuum of systems engineering activities needed to develop, produce, and field complex systems.
Provide hands-on experience by participating in a representative sample of T&E activities.
Develop appreciation for the systems engineering activity required to support tests – the identification of testing resources such as test facilities, test/system simulators, etc.
The course materials are divided into modules which can be accessed by clicking Modules on the course menu. A module will have several sections including the overview, content, readings, discussions, and assignments. You are encouraged to preview all sections of the module before starting. Most modules run for a period of seven (7) days, exceptions are noted in the Course Outline. You should regularly check the Calendar and Announcements for assignment due dates.

All assignments must be turned in. Late assignments will be subject to a grade degradation of 5 points per week, except when prior approval is obtained from the instructor. It is assumed that graduate students are adept at writing English and no points will normally be subtracted for English errors; however, in cases of exceptionally poor English, points will be deducted

Deadlines for Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Courses
Students may add a course up to one week after the start of the term for that particular course. Students may drop courses according to the drop deadlines outlined in the EP academic calendar (https://ep.jhu.edu/student-services/academic-calendar/). Between the 6th week of the class and prior to the final withdrawal deadline, a student may withdraw from a course with a W on their academic record. A record of the course will remain on the academic record with a W appearing in the grade column to indicate that the student registered and withdrew from the course.

Course Auditing

All lecture content will remain accessible to auditing students, but access to all other course material is left to the discretion of the instructor.
