Description

Analyzing large data sets (“Big Data”), is an increasingly important skill set. One of the disciplines being relied upon for such analysis is machine learning. In this course, we will approach machine learning from a practitioner’s perspective. We will examine the issues that impact our ability to learn good models (e.g., inductive bias, the curse of dimensionality, the bias-variance dilemma, and no free lunch). We will then examine a variety of approaches to learning models, covering the spectrum from unsupervised to supervised learning, as well as parametric versus non-parametric methods. Students will explore and implement several learning algorithms, including logistic regression, nearest neighbor, decision trees, and feed-forward neural networks, and will incorporate strategies for addressing the issues impacting performance (e.g., regularization, clustering, and dimensionality reduction). In addition, students will engage in online discussions, focusing on the key questions in developing learning systems. At the end of this course, students will be able to implement and apply a variety of machine learning methods to real-world problems, as well as be able to assess the performance of these algorithms on different types of data sets. Prerequisite(s): EN.605.202 – Data Structures or equivalent.

The course materials are divided into modules which can be accessed by clicking Modules on the course menu. A module will have several sections including the lecture content, readings, and assignments. Most modules run for a period of seven (7) days, with exceptions noted in the Course Outline. You should regularly check the Calendar and Announcements for assignment due dates.

Required Software

The projects will require many of the algorithms covered in the course to be implemented and tested.  The student may choose from among many popular high-level computer languages (for example, Python or Java) although MATLAB and R may not be used except for data analyses. 

Student Coursework Requirements

It is expected that each module will take approximately 7–10 hours per week to complete. Here is an approximate breakdown: reading the assigned sections of the texts (approximately 1-2 hours per week), homework assignments (1-2 hours per week), and project assignments (approximately 5–6 hours per week).

This course will consist of the following basic student requirements:

Computer Projects (50% of Final Grade Calculation)

Five computer projects will be assigned over the course of the semester. Each project will have a separate written description that includes the specific grading criteria for that project.

As noted above, each project will require the student to develop and test the machine learning algorithm(s) as specified in the project description.  It is expected that each student is proficient in at least one higher-level language. The programs must be your own work! 

For machine learning, popular languages include Python, Java, and C/C++/C#. For the programming assignments, only basic libraries are permitted to be used. Libraries such as scikit-learn, weka, RapidMiner, MLPack, Keras, Theano, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar are not permitted under any circumstances. No programming language is specified; however, it is recommended that all assignments be completed in Python, Java, or C/C++.

Languages such as MATLAB or R are not permitted, except to support analyses of the results of experiments.

The submission requirements for each requirement, along with the grading criteria, will vary by project and will therefore be provided explicitly by each project description.

Problem Sets (25% of Final Grade Calculation)

Problem set assignments will be made during most of the course weeks in support of the material covered in the week’s module.  The solutions will be due as shown in the course syllabus. The problem set solutions must be your own work.  All answers on the problem sets must be justified by showing the reasoning and/or the calculations used to obtain the answers.

Final Exam (20% of Final Grade Calculation)

The final exam will be taken outside of class (i.e., take-home exam) and will be available on Blackboard as specified in the class schedule. You may use the course text and your class notes to complete the exam, but it must be your own work – you may not receive help from anyone else.  You will have approximately 1 week to complete the exam; it will be due at 9:00 AM on the date specified in the class schedule.

All answers on the exams must be justified by showing the reasoning and/or the calculations used to obtain the answers.  If the answer to a given question is incorrect, partial credit may be given if the bulk of the documented approach, reasoning, and/or mathematical relationships demonstrate that the underlying concepts are well understood.

Preparation and Participation (5% of Final Grade Calculation)

You are responsible for carefully reading all assigned material and being prepared for the class lectures and discussions. The majority of readings are from the course text. Additional reading may be assigned to supplement text readings.

Evaluation of preparation and participation is based on contributions to discussions that demonstrate insight and critical thinking, and on occasional brief quizzes to evaluate the comprehension of the assigned reading material.

Grading Policy

Assignments are due according to the dates posted on the Blackboard course site. You may check these due dates in the Course Calendar.  Submissions up to one week late will be penalized by the reduction of one letter grade; submissions later than one week beyond the due date will not be accepted.  Requests for extensions that are received in advance of the corresponding deadlines will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The ability to clearly and concisely communicate the hypotheses, procedures, and results of scientific research is expected of all science and engineering professionals.  Egregious violations of the rules of the English language will be will be taken as an indication of poor written communication ability and should be expected to detract from your grade.

I will strive to post grades within one week after the assignment due dates.

A grade of A indicates achievement of consistent excellence and distinction throughout the course—that is, conspicuous excellence in all aspects of assignments and discussion in every week.

A grade of B indicates work that meets all course requirements on a level appropriate for graduate academic work.

Course Policies

It is strongly recommended that students have a solid foundation in calculus (through multivariate), discrete mathematics, linear algebra, probability & statistics, and software development.

Academic Policies

Deadlines for Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Courses

Students may add a course up to one week after the start of the term for that particular course. Students may drop courses according to the drop deadlines outlined in the EP academic calendar (https://ep.jhu.edu/student-services/academic-calendar/). Between the 6th week of the class and prior to the final withdrawal deadline, a student may withdraw from a course with a W on their academic record. A record of the course will remain on the academic record with a W appearing in the grade column to indicate that the student registered and withdrew from the course.
